| Propano, a farm standing on the edge of Saluzzo, Cuneo, Piedmont has been owned by the Camisassi family for three generations. The farm is a squared shaped construction and the old farm buildings were built around a large courtyard and used as lodgings, stables and store rooms for tools, machinery, grain and hay. In one of the corners stands the owner’s house which was once the residence of the Cistercian Monks Superior. The monks were the original owners’ of the land and in 1525, by a Public Act, the Marquis of Saluzzo, Michele Antonio donated the Propano Estate to the Revello Abbey. In the agricultural section an “agriturismo” with 9 rooms and a studio apartment has been created. The colourful and spacious rooms are equipped with telephone, Tv and all have internet connection. | Between history and legend… Lonely and imposing Mt Viso, the “stone king”, 3841 metres high, has fascinated travellers of all times. We are in the lands of the Marquisate, Occitan territory: the Po valley, where the longest river of Italy rises. It a land scattered with castles, abbeys and monasteries; along its ancient mule tracks and dirt roads travelled monks, merchants, knights and brigands. The mythical “road of salt”, leading to France, was an obligatory route not only for men, but also for salt, anchovies, oil, spices, textiles and wares. “Mt Viso hole” was excavated here: it is an irregular tunnel, 75 metres long, under the Traversette col at an altitude of 2882 metres, for the passage of loaded mules and stooped men. Merchants from the Dauphiné, Provence and Burgundy wandered from farm to farm. These people crossed the Alps, descended the hills and arrived in the plain. Several travellers used to stop in this ancient inn where Virginia welcomed her guests with a smile, a hot meal and the warmth of the fireplace. The agriturismo... Today, after long restoration works, the “Virginia” opens again. Inside you will find the rustic and warm atmosphere of the past, stone, wood, terracotta and old furnishings. Warm colours in the rooms evoke the typical atmosphere of rural houses. Our seven rooms are furnished with wood and wrought-iron beds, wardrobes and desks recalling folk culture and curtains evoking Occitan boiserie of ancient mansions. Large common rooms dedicated to our guests: sitting-room, breakfast and dining room, a library with fireplace where you can relax. In the basement a large cellar where you can taste wines and typical products of this Occitan territory. | The farmhouse lies 500 mts above sea-level at the southern end of Piedmont Region and Asti Province, close to the border with Liguria (which is where the Italian Riviera is) ; in fact, on most summer days there is a pleasant southerly breeze the locals call “marino”, i.e. “sea wind”. The farm buildings are near the top of a hill overlooking the Bormida river valley and Langhe, at the end of an unpaved stretch of road . The view is breathtaking! . Three small apartments are awaiting you in a wing of the big, old, lovingly restored farmhouse in which the owners live. Each apartment is named after one of the many wild animal species of our hills (Fox, Badger and Deer) and includes a double bedroom, a bathroom with tub and/or shower, and a large sitting-room-cum-kitchen with one extra sofa-bed. It comes fully equipped : bed, bath and kitchen linen, books, radio, cutlery, dishes, pots and pans etc. The “Fox”, which is on the ground floor, is fit for disabled guests on wheelchairs. Breakfast is not served , but all that is needed for a pleasant, leisurely do-it-yourself awakening is supplied : milk, tea, coffee, biscuits, rusks, butter, homemade jams, honey from our bees ... You will be able to shop for any other foodstuffs at one of the weekly village markets or the little local shops, or directly at neighbouring farmers producing “dop” cheese and “doc” wines. It is a traditional Le langhe stone Farmhouse that is probably the oldest in the county, warm in winter and fresh in the summer.
