| A trip to Pollinaria is a unique insight into the history, primal energies and horizons of the rural world. In the heart of Italy’s Abruzzo region, Pollinaria integrates research projects at the conflux of art and science with agricultural practices supporting biodiversity. An ancient rural complex constitutes the core of these manifold activities, while simultaneously being a dwelling for travellers in search of unexplored itineraries. Pollinaria is immersed in a vast wildlife and forest reserve, where pastures and centuries-old woodland coexist with organic farmed land. Vestini’s historical villages and the extraordinary natural resources of the Gran Sasso National Park surround harmoniously this place of discovery and cultivation of the senses. Every room, within the original walls of a late 18th century farmhouse, is named after the progenitor of one of the patriarchal families who once inhabited the house: l’Abbate, lu Pizzute, Peppine lu Mocculose. The former pig stables have been adapted into an independent residence: il Trogolo. All rooms benefit from antique furnishings and fine models of Abruzzo’s farm crafts. Signs of human settlement from times long past mark the environment of Pollinaria, forming a large pattern of manor farms and hamlets. From the mid-19th century to the second decade of the 20th century, these land and communities made up the glorious farm of Raffaele Baldini Palladini, a pioneer of modern-day olive growing. Baldini Palladini's “extra fine” olive oil received gold medals and the highest distinctions at the most prestigious international expositions of the time, and conquered markets around the globe, reaching as far as the court of the Tsar of Russia. The authentic Baldini Palladini olive mill has been recently converted into the Olive Oil Museum of Loreto Aprutino, a unique venue that brings history alive and instills in its visitors a cult for oil and the olive. |
